Three new definitions to help us today:
Stratification: the social process through which rewards and resources such as wealth, power, and prestige are distributed systematically and unequally within or among social systems. It is based on identifiable social processes through which people are sorted into social categories such as class, race, and gender.
Social scientists see society as a stratification system that is based on a hierarchy of power (the ability to direct someone else’s behavior), privilege (honor and respect), and prestige (income, wealth, and property), which leads to patterns of social inequality. Inequality is about who gets what, how they get it, and why they get it. Social inequality is typically tied to race, gender, and class.
POWER: the ability to control others, events, or resources; to make happen what one wants to happen in spite of obstacles, resistance, or opposition. Power is a thing that is held, coveted, seized, taken away, lost, and/or stolen.

YOU will have to have your own Media Friday ready for, you guessed it, FRIDAY. (it's a freebie though, no mark)
Tomorrow we'll complete the Lorber reading and related questions.
Your Unit I project is due on Monday.
Tuesday, Feb. 3rd Here are two definitions that will help you with this section of the Lorber article we're reading: Ascribed status is the social status a person is assigned at birth or assumed involuntarily later in life. It is a position that is neither earned nor chosen but assigned.
Achieved status is a concept developed by the anthropologist Ralph Linton denoting a social position that a person can acquire on the basis of merit; it is a position that is earned or chosen. It is the opposite of ascribed status. It reflects personal skills, abilities, and efforts.

Here are two definitions that will help you with this section of the Lorber article we're reading:
Ascribed status is the social status a person is assigned at birth or assumed involuntarily later in life.
